A French hummingbird moth

This is not a creature found in Mahone Bay, but we got some great photos so I’m going to post about it anyway!

We spent 5 weeks in June/July in Europe, and while in the Deux-Sevres region of France where my mum and dad live, we enjoyed the daily company of several hummingbird moths. The Latin name is Hemaris and they are sphinx moths. Not sure which of the three European species this one is, but we only saw this species while we were there.

We got some awesome slow-motion video of the moth feeding, too. But I can’t add that to the blog easily so you’ll just have to imagine it! I can email it to anyone who is interested.
