I was making lunch on April 17 when I got a call from our bookkeeper who lives right on the ocean in Mahone Bay. She first asked if I had any kids at home with me (yup, always) and then said there was a seal on the little beach by her house. So I covered the half-made sandwiches, took a swig of my tea, bundled Milo into the car, and drove as fast as I could to her house. Took me about two minutes. And there was the seal, as calm as can be, lounging on the sandy beach.
Milo and I gradually walked closer and closer until we were about 10 metres from the seal. We stayed on the roadside and didn’t head down onto the beach. I didn’t want to disturb her too much because it was the first warm, sunny day of the year and she was enjoying the warmth. She looked at us a few times, and stretched her front and back flippers a few times, and arched her back. But mainly just lay there happily on her side, completely out of the water. It was wonderful to watch.
Thanks for sharing that Kara, beautiful words and eyes!
How wonderful to share the sunshine and the peace with this seal.
