In 2011 and 2012 the peepers started peeping on April 12. This year, the 12th was met with silence. Not surprising given the long, cold, snowy winter we’ve had. I’ll listen for peepers again tonight. Temperatures today are over 20° with high humidity and plenty of warm sunshine. The peepers must surely be crawling out of their winter dens as I write.
The first frog I heard during the day this year was April 17. In the marshes by Bayview School the frogs were chirping constantly — it was the first warm, sunny day of the year. Not sure what kind of frogs they were but they had a melodic sound a lot like a song bird but more repetitive.
We’ve seen plenty of tadpoles in the stream and pond behind our house, but no adult frogs yet. And no sign of the turtle yet.
